It is our commitment to meet the needs of consumers & customers in an environmentally sound & sustainable manner

We have proactively adopted and implemented the international Environmental standard ISO 14001.1996 as a tool to manage the impact of our activities on our environment and our Environmental Management System was certified to ISO 14001 in February 2002  by "Societe generalle du surveillance". We undertake biannual surveillance audits as well as internal self-inspection programs to ensure the sustainability of the system and progress on the environmental management plan.

The main environmental concerns relate to: water use; energy use; raw material and other resource use; chemical / hazardous material use; air emissions (point source, mobile source and fugitive emission); liquid effluent (discharge, spillage and leakage); Solid and hazardous waste; noise arising from the production processes, warehousing and storage. Bulk above ground oil storage and the workshop.

Unilever’s global environmental policy sets out our commitment to meet the needs of consumers and customers in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner, through continuous improvements in environmental performance in all our activities. It applies to all our companies worldwide. We focus efforts towards sustainability in three key areas: agriculture, fish and water.

We implement our policy through our environmental strategy which focuses on six key goals. The first three are long-standing:

  • Reducing the impacts of our own operations, or eco-efficiency.
  • Improving the impacts of our products, or eco-innovation
  • Ensuring a sustainable supply of key resources, through three sustainability initiatives in agriculture, fish and water.

Building on these programmes, in 2003 we extended our strategy to address three additional areas:

  • Connecting better with our consumers on environmental care
  • sharing our eco-manufacturing skills across the wider supply chain, including third-party product suppliers, providers of key raw materials and transportation
  • embedding environmental sustainability into everyday decision making.
